Listen Like Learn music programs are or have been taught in Canada, Europe, Israel and the USA.
OBJECTIVES of the Association:
a) To promote, in general, the value of music to all young children.
b) To make provision for a pedagogical approach toward sound and musical expression which favors development of the young child.
c) To provide access to music, as early as possible, for every child.
d) To improve the standard and skills of Listen Like Learn teachers in their musical education of the young child.
e) To maintain association teacher eligibility by requiring and providing "Listen Like Learn", and "Your Baby Needs Music" teacher training courses.
f) To maintain program standardization of Listen Like Learn teachers.
Basic Essentials of a LISTEN LIKE LEARN Music Course:
1. We are concerned with the development of the whole child; enjoyment of music is of paramount importance.
2. Every class contains the following elements: listening, singing, movement, rhythm, melody, expression & dynamics, the arts, including dance, drama,
poetry & painting and always a lullaby.
3. The use of the "Musical Family" & the Curwen time names for teaching note patterns.
4. The use of folk songs belonging to the country in which the children live.
5. The recognition of the importance of incorporating expression, dynamics and form as one of the most musical aspects of teaching music.
6. Learning to read music through the story of the "Great Staff" and through walking melodies before writing them.
7. Introducing the children to all the musical instrumental families in their third year, and helping them choose which instrument they would like to learn.
8. Keeping parents aware of what we are doing by attendance at classes and through the children's workbooks. We do not give homework.
9. Starting classes whenever possible with "Your Baby Needs Music" - mother and baby classes - babies who later can move into the "Listen Like Learn"
classes.
10. While waiting for classes to begin the children look at books. (This helps to emphasize the importance of reading).
11. Giving class directions musically, by singing or playing an instrument.
12. In order to feel the music children do not wear shoes. Bare feet or "music socks) are encouraged.
13. Classes are organized at minimum cost. We do not demand expensive instruments, equipment, or special clothing. Just the child's voice, body and
imagination.
14. Whenever possible, teachers are encouraged to teach in twos and share the program and expenses where there are ten children, which is the number
we think best.
15. We have three terms per year of ten weeks each.
16. All teachers take the Listen Like Learn course and belong to the Listen Like Learn Association.
17. We are not concerned with the performance as such. Parents and friends watch our normal classes. This also applies to any video taping/program.
